WATCH: Marvel Unveils First Asian Superhero In ‘Shang-Chi’ Trailer

Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, its upcoming and first Asian superhero film.

The trailer, released today, introduces Shang-Chi (the lead character), also known as the Master of Kung Fu and Brother Hand, a fictional superhero in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

In the short video, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past after he is drawn into the Ten Rings organisation by Wenwu (Tony Leung), his father who is the leader of the gang.

The protagonist is played by Simu-Liu, Chinese-Canadian actor, who had first lobbied and got rejected for a spot on a Marvel series back in 2014. The studio heeded his call five years later for an unprecedented role.

Other popular Asian actors who starred in the movie are Katy (played by Awkwafina), Fela Chen (Jiang Li), and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan.

The film is written by David Callaham, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion pictures, and scheduled to be released in the United States on September 3, 2021.

‘Shang-Chi’ was initially scheduled to be released in February 2021, but was delayed on multiple occasions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
