Grammy-award-winning Nigerian singer Tems recently shared insights into her creative process, revealing that she felt like she “blacked out into a different world” while writing the lyrics for her latest single, ‘Me & U.’
Tems, who had not released a single in two years before ‘Me & U,’ expressed her spiritual connection with the song during a recent interview with BBC1Xtra.
She described the songwriting experience as a conversation with God and explained that the lyrics reflected her desire for a deep connection.
She stated, “I just closed my eyes, and I was like ‘what do I want?’ and I just started writing the treatment.”
Moreover, Tems directed the music video herself, aiming to portray “God being with me from when I was a child in every version of me.”
She explained how the video was a reflection of her journey and her spiritual connection during its creation, saying, “I was really giving him my all. I had not slept. I was like fainting with my eyes wide open.”
Reflecting on her musical journey, Tems shared her aspirations to be “in a jazz band” and sing in a lounge. She expressed amazement at the unexpected success she has achieved and how it surpassed her wildest imagination.
Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, gained international recognition through her collaboration with Wizkid on the song ‘Essence’ in 2020.
Since then, she has become a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, earning various awards and accolades, including her first Grammy award in February.
