On Sunday, the youth in Benin took to the streets to protest against the presence of the controversial transgender figure, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, in Edo State.
The demonstration was triggered by perceived insults directed at the Oba of Benin in a video clip circulating in 2022.
In the video, Bobrisky humorously suggested that the Oba of Benin should marry him. However, this remark, intended as a joke, appeared to have offended residents of Benin who interpreted it as disrespectful to their rich cultural heritage.
Despite the controversy, Bobrisky traveled to Benin for an event over the weekend, prompting an impromptu and fervent reaction from the youth who gathered in large numbers to express their disapproval.
In a viral video of the protest circulating online, the youths displayed their rejection on placards carrying messages such as “He is a bad influence; We don’t want him in our state.”
Reportedly, the protest intensified, leading to Bobrisky hastily leaving Benin City for his safety.
