forgiveness

During Sunday school service today, the preacher talked about ‘sanctification’ but it was the part where she mentioned ‘Forgiveness’ that got to me.

She mentioned a lot of bible verses that spoke about ‘forgiveness’ and ‘unforgiveness’ and ones that I remember are Ephesians 4:26,31, Mark 11:25-26,Matthew 5:23-24.

Ephesians 4:26,31 says:

“Be ye angry, and sin not:let not the sun go down on your wrath; and be ye kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you”(KJV).

Mark 11:25-26 says:
25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.(KJV)

Matthew 5:23-24 says:
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

These scriptures made me remember what a friend had asked when Kemi Olunloyo was re-arrested lastweek; “Can Pastor David Ibiyeomie still preach forgiveness to his congregation?

We are always about practicing what we preach but in the case of this clergyman, he has done the opposite of what he probably preaches to his congregation, that is the act of forgiveness.

We all know that Kemi Olunloyo is one of Nigeria’s most controversial journalist and we know that over the years she has said hurtful things to people all in the name of speaking the truth and most of the time people have lashed back but i’m doubtful that it has ever reached this extent. People have pleaded on her behalf, both friend and foe and as a man of God forgiveness is expected.

I am not taking sides or trying to say she deserves or doesn’t deserve to go to jail, I am just being objective. He is a man of God and should lead by example, after all the bible says that we should forgive so that God can forgive us too.

What happened to all the preaching about forgiveness? Didn’t the bible say that ‘Vengeance is of the Lord?'(Romans 12:19). Maybe I am wrong because I do not know the damages that Kemi has caused to his person and I am not trying to justify either one of them but my question still stands”Can he still preach forgiveness?
